Collections

Four techniques, four characters

How a cloth is made decides how it looks, how it hangs, and how it has to be cared for.

Folded lengths of Parang Barong Batik fabric stacked

3 fabrics

Batik

The motif is drawn in wax before the cloth is dyed, which gives batik its crisp outlines and layered colour. Usually on cotton — light and comfortable for everyday clothing.

Folded lengths of Sumba Ikat, Earth fabric stacked

6 fabrics

Tenun

The pattern is built from the threads during weaving rather than printed on the surface. The result is a reversible cloth with texture you can feel and motif edges you can recognise.

Folded lengths of Palembang Songket Lepus fabric stacked

2 fabrics

Songket

A supplementary thread — often gold or silver — is laid in during weaving so the motif appears to float above the ground. These are the heaviest and most formal fabrics in the catalogue.

Folded lengths of Sasirangan Gelombang fabric stacked

1 fabric

Jumputan

The cloth is bound or stitched at chosen points before dyeing, so the gathered areas resist the colour and leave rippled patterns that are never quite identical twice.
