Guide
How many metres do you need?
Fabric estimates for common sewing projects, calculated on a 115 cm width.
These are estimates, not guarantees. Actual requirements depend on body measurements, the pattern you use, the fabric width, and the direction of the motif. For directional or large-scale motifs, add 15–25% to be safe.
| Project | Estimate | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Long-sleeved shirt | 2 – 2.5 m | Add 0.5 m for directional motifs. |
| Short-sleeved shirt | 1.5 – 2 m | Enough for sizes M–L. |
| Blouse | 1.5 – 2 m | Depends on length and sleeve style. |
| Long skirt | 2 – 2.5 m | Pleated styles need more. |
| Full-length dress | 3 – 3.5 m | Add extra for wide sleeves. |
| Trousers | 2 – 2.5 m | Heavier cloth works better. |
| Outer layer / kimono | 2.5 – 3 m | Includes edge facings. |
| Tablecloth for six | 2.5 m | Includes a 25 cm drop. |
| 45 cm cushion cover | 0.5 m | Covers both faces. |
Working out your requirement
Measure the longest piece on your pattern, multiply it by the number of pieces that will not fit side by side across the fabric width, then add 10% for seam allowances and adjustments. If the motif has to line up across a seam, add one full pattern repeat for each join.
Shrinkage
Cotton and other natural fibres typically shrink 3–5% on the first wash. Wash and dry the cloth before cutting so the finished garment does not change size later.
