The signature of ikat is in the edges: the threads are bound and dyed before weaving, so the motif outline is never as sharp as a print. Elongated diamonds are set in rows between horizontal bands. At 210 gsm this cotton is substantial enough to hold its shape while still sewing well on a domestic machine.

East Sumba is known for ikat in earth tones drawn from root and bark dyes. Binding the threads before dyeing demands that the whole design be worked out at the very start, while the yarn is still stretched loose on the frame.
